Mission
The Green Sanctuary Team seeks to strengthen the connections between spiritual practice, sustainability, and environmental consciousness at UUFBR – consistent with the UU Seventh Principle of “Respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part” – by pursuing accreditation as a UUA Green Sanctuary over a period of 12 to 24 months.
Goals
- Elevate environmental consciousness in three arenas of Unitarian Universalist life: sustainable lifestyle choices, congregational programs and practices, outreach and activism within the broader community
- Plan, coordinate, and implement projects that will lead to accreditation as a UUA Green Sanctuary (and that may also contribute to the Florida Earth Day Festival)
Team Membership
Any member or friend of UUFBR may join the Green Sanctuary Team. Two co-chairs (chosen by the team) may recruit team members as needed. The team will review all relevant aspects of congregational life including: worship and celebration, religious education, social justice, building and grounds, communications, social activities, fundraising and money management, and membership, with the goal of integrating sustainable living and environmental consciousness throughout the organization.
Activities
As required by the Green Sanctuary accreditation process, the team will conduct an Environmental Audit and plan, coordinate, and implement an Action Plan consisting of at least 12 projects and activities in the four areas of:
- Worship and Celebration
- Religious Education
- Environmental Justice
- Sustainable Living
The team will meet on a regular basis and keep the congregation informed of its activities, primarily via “news” posts on the uufbr.org website. Minutes will be taken at each meeting and published on the website.
Each project from the Action Plan will have a project leader (or two) that will coordinate activities and recruit help from the congregation. If needed, a designated fund will be created.
