THIS MOVIE IS: Ominous, Suspenseful
An aloof investment banker’s life spirals into peril and paranoia after his brother gives him an odd birthday gift: the chance to play a mysterious game.
The movie seems to be about how he is reduced to humility and humanity–or maybe that’s just a trick on him. It’s like a control freak’s worst nightmare. Director David Fincher squeezes every bit of emotion and suspense from each scene especially as the tension starts to build. The film is a masterclass in how to build suspense slowly and play with the audience’s expectations. Michael Douglas is phenomenal: his performance is on point as his paranoia is not overplayed when his perfectly isolated life is completely thrown for a loop. Sean Penn is really good as Conrad Nicholas’s brother who is equally paranoid about the game as the events of the film unfold.
